Breaking Fake News Update (v14)

Fake News Broke on August 22, 2025!

Can you imagine 25,000 spectators at a UFC event at the White House? Can you imagine a weirder way to celebrate our 250th birthday? Those things are real, I can assure you.

And can you think of anyone other than Kristi Noem that would step up so eagerly to help complete the mission? That part is fake, at least so far. We got out in front with the fake news so fast, we may have to wait a little longer for the real news to catch up!

As always, if there's fake news, we'll be all over it.

Let's Fight This - TOGETHER!

A Special Message from
the Twice-Impeached
45th President of the
United States

They've got it all wrong, the Lame Stream Media, the liars on CNN and MSDNC and the failing New York Times and the Bezos Washington Post and all the rest... they've got it All Wrong.

Let me give you the Truth about what's happening here.

First of all, I didn't lose the election.

I didn't lose the election, so there was no reason for me to pack anything, so I didn't pack anything, because I won and wasn't going to be leaving. And I'd still be your President, Right Now, and there wouldn't have been a problem if only Georgia had found those 11,780 votes like I asked them to, and like Lindsey asked them to, and like Rudy asked them to, and like everyone else asked them to.

Or Arizona, too, if they had done the right thing. Or Michigan, or Nevada, or  Pennsylvania, or Wisconsin. So if they had just done the right thing, none of this would be happening right now, and all my documents would be safe and the Country would be safe, our Borders and our Stock Market and our Taxes - everything would be safe, if they had just done the right thing.

But they didn't and when that wimp, that un-American, un-Patriotic traitor Mike Pence refused to do the right thing and send it back to the states like he was supposed to, I was stuck. I swear, my Secret Service guys should have just grabbed him and stuffed him in the SUV. Worthless.

Anyway, Melania was so frazzled that we were leaving - she had more decorating to do, and stuff to document just like she was doing on January 6th and didn't know anything about what was happening, she really didn't - she was upset, she loved it here - she just started throwing stuff in Tupperware bowls and tubs and stuff, even the jewelry I gave her, the ungrateful wench.

And there I was, alone. Jared was, I don't know, showering all day long or counting his Saudi money with his crook of a father - why did I pardon him again?

Those worthless sons of mine were probably out golfing or something, or maybe Donny Jr was home waiting for what's her name, the "The Best is Yet To Come!" girl I paid $60,000 to for introducing Don Jr. to the crowd at the Ellipse on January 6th - what a waste of money she is! And how on earth was she married to that incompetent commie nutjob in California, Gavin Newsom? And now she's my son's fiancé? What did I do to deserve this?

And my beloved Ivanka was home with those Beautiful grandchildren of mine, aren't they Beautiful? They are the most beautiful grandchildren a man could have, right? Just Beautiful, through and through.

So the staff people, the ones that I hadn't scared off,  the staff came running up to the residence with boxes every day, packing, packing, boxing up everything they could get their hands on, I don't even know what they put in all the boxes, the stuff was just thrown in, all willy-nilly, and then the boxes were stuffed in the truck and off everything went to my Beautiful, Historic, Important Mar-a-Lago, the most Famous house in all the world.

I barely managed to get my hands on the compromising photo books, and my pictures of Vlad - it was crazy.

And then, when they reached out to me last year, I had no idea there was anything being stored at my beloved Mar-a-Lago that I wasn't supposed to have. I thought I had taken care of most of the stuff anyone would worry about; that was ripped up and disposed of at the White House.

And what about that Crooked Hillary flunky, Maggie Haberman, the third-rate NY Times reporter - half the kid her parents were, for sure, sharing those pictures... who takes pictures of other peoples' toilets?

And remember when I complained about having to flush and flush and flush? Yeah, well now you understand right? Damn 'green' toilets. You gotta flush and flush and flush them, it's a mess. Horrible.

And in January when I gave them boxes, they were boxes I had never even seen before, maybe someone found them in the back of Melania's closet, that's why I didn't know anything about them. And so, they took the boxes and I thought that was it. They even got back that meteorological map of Dorian - just like I told you, Alabama was in danger the whole time!

And then they said other stuff was missing.

And so I let the lawyers handle everything, and they all said we gave everything back, and that's what they told them, so I just assumed that there was nothing left. They even signed something, saying they had given everything back, I didn't even know we had anything, I didn't pack anything.

And then we heard from them again - good lord, don't these people have anything do to other than pester me about boxes of stuff I know nothing about? Why aren't they trying to put Crooked Hillary in jail? Why the hell aren't they publishing all the stuff off Hunter's laptop, all the Biden Crime Family stuff, instead of trying to pretend there's a Trump Crime Family? What a lie! Everything I have, I've earned the hard way, ever since I was a kid. Even my bone spurs, hard-fought battle but I got them.

'Put a new lock on the door', they said - 'it's not secure enough,' they said. So we did, and even that wasn't good enough, they wanted the camera footage and they sent a subpoena, and still we were cooperating with them, just like from the beginning when the White House Staff filled the boxes and put them in the truck and then they came and picked stuff up.

Just like I've said all along, if they wanted the boxes back, I would have given them back, but they never asked. And once they sent the subpoena, why should I give them back the boxes? Just because they sent me a subpoena?

I've gotten hundreds of subpoenas in my life, and I never just do what they ask me to, that's ridiculous, especially when Trump is under attack, all the time, my entire life. I've been sued more times than anyone in history! My legal files are the biggest you've never seen! They're massive, way bigger than Obama's! I can show you - mine are bigger, no question about it.

And it doesn't matter anyway, because I declassified everything - every single piece of paper, photo, post-it note, article, white paper, briefing book, eyes only piece of paper they shoved under my nose - I declassified it ALL - all at the same time. They must know that, everyone knows that - I can do it, and I did it, and all of this is stupid. Nothing is classified anymore, I declassified all of it, I stood right there over the boxes.

Oh, wait that's not how I did it, I had no idea what was in the boxes, the staff took care of that. But I declassified everything, everything in the residence was declassified, even if it wasn't classified in the first place.

And even if I didn't, it doesn't matter, because all of this is old stuff now, since they kicked me out of my White House in January 2021, that bastard Mike Pence, we should have hung him, just like I said. So how can something a year-and-a-half old be a threat to Our Great Country?

Well, it was Great once, now it's a Third World Country with the libs and Sleepy Joe and Carmella and Drunk Nancy and Cryin' Chuck and the Radical Left Squad and the Woke Mob in charge - what a Mess they have made of our Beautiful Country, right? Antifa and BLM and all the rest...

And now that we've got this NEW Witch Hunt, after the Fake Russia Russia Russia and Impeachment#1 and Impeachment #2 and Mueller's Fake Witch Hunt, now we've got another one to deal with and I tell you, real Americans are just not going to stand for this anymore! We must FIGHT to get Our Great Country back again. And that's exactly what I'm going to do.

Because these documents that I never took and didn't know I had and they could have had back at any time just by asking for them and they're not top secret any longer because it's old stuff on old paper, and besides, I declassified EVERYTHING, and this RAID on my Beautiful Home, the most Beautiful, Famous home in the world, ask anyone, this Raid and this Unlawful Search - they touched Melania's clothes, can you believe that? I think one of them even put on her I Don't Care Do U? jacket, we saw that on the camera, I'm sure we did.

These are just the tip of the iceberg that's going to hit Our Country if we don't stop the woke mob, the lazy liberals who are trying to turn us into a Fourth World Country and if there weren't any of those last week, we're the first and best Country ever to become one. And don't believe any of that Climate Change crap; if it was so warm, why do we still have icebergs? And that iceberg aiming for America right now?

Civil war, I tell you. Some people are saying we're on the verge of a civil war.

I even called Merrick Garland - and have you ever heard anyone so wimpy? His mother Judy, boy could she sing, right? He sounds like a little kid up there, trying to convince his parents he wasn't out drinking with what's her name, that Renate person... oh wait, that's a different judge, never mind.

Anyway, Garland, I called him, asked him what I could do to calm things down after HE raided MY house, SEIZED my documents that I never had and even if I did have them, it doesn't matter because there's nothing wrong with it, and besides, I declassified everything back in January before I left Washington so I wouldn't have to be there for the Fake Inauguration of the Fake President.

Here I am, trying to help, and what do I get? NOTHING! Merrick Garland, he didn't even take my call. We get nothing, Patriots - you and I, we get nothing. But that's all going to change.

With your help, and your prayers, and your donations, we will Fight this Together! We Love You. You are all Beautiful, Special people. Stand back and stand by, and if you do that near an FBI office, that's even better.

We Love You.

And we will fight this together.

TGIF 6/10/22

Good week? Bad week?

If you watched TV last night, you probably have an opinion on whether America was well served by last night's opening session of the January 6th Committee's public proceedings.

Me? I'm torn. It was gut-wrenching to watch the new video, it was appalling to hear some of the testimony, and it was reaffirming, I guess, to have my impressions of certain people proven correct.

It was horrifying to see, again, what the danger of allegiance to a cult leader can do to our country. And the comments from the alleged Republicans - before, during and after - reinforced that danger, to the nth degree.

Now, for some specifics: On TNN, Sean Hannity said "the one person who looks good is Donald Trump." Meanwhile, this morning there's a boatload of tweeting about the "FACT" that Nancy Pelosi and the FBI were behind the insurrection.

I'll get to Hannity in a minute - first, that FACT about Pelosi.
  • If it was Pelosi and the FBI, the alleged Republicans in the House and Senate would have been orgasmically calling for an investigation, instead of working so hard to prevent one, and would not give up until there was one. Hell, we all know they would have had their own investigation, with no Dems participating, and held it live, with Kevin McCarthy trying to beat his own record for the longest blowhard speech on the floor of the House - before noon - every single day.
  • If it was Pelosi and the FBI, she'd be the last person to call for an investigation, although I do have to give her props for calling for her own head, and for having Lorena Boebert tweet her location during the tourist visit - good bipartisan collaboration on that, don't you think?
  • If it was Pelosi and the FBI, would all the Rs have rushed to Trump's defense, or traipse off to Mar-a-Lago and kiss the ring or whatever it is they do there?
  • If it was Pelosi and the FBI, would Kevin McCarthy have made all those phone calls?
  • If it was Pelosi and the FBI, how come it was Proud Boys and Oath Keepers, and not a teeming horde of progressives who insurrected?
  • If it was Pelosi and the FBI, explain why she'd be trying to stop the certification of an election her party's candidate won?
  • If it was Pelosi and the FBI, why were so many notable Republicans at the Stop the Steal rally, egging people on to go to the Capitol and "stop the steal"?
  • If it was Pelosi and the FBI, why are so many right-wingers pleading guilty and blaming Trump?
  • If it was Pelosi and the FBI, why didn't Trump play the hero and call in the National Guard? He didn't - Pence did. Trump was not in control of anything other than the TV remote and the hamburders after his rally.
  • If it was Pelosi and the FBI, don't you think Trump would have been out on the stump, every single day, all day, blaming her and them, instead of merely telling The Big Lie over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over?
  • If it was Pelosi and the FBI, why in the world did Trump tell the insurrectionists that they were very special and he loved them?
  • If it was Pelosi and the FBI, would any of the alleged Republicans be asking Trump for pardons?
  • If it was Pelosi and the FBI, would Steve Bannon have said all hell is going to break loose on January 6th? How would he know?
And finally, circling back around to Hannity: If it was Nancy Pelosi and the FBI behind all of this, would he have sent the texts he did? You know, the ones to Mark Meadows, and Kayleigh ImaNinny?

Of course the hell not. He would have been texting Kevin McCarthy and laying out a plan to take over the House, NOW, without further ado, instead of talking about his bad feelings about what was going to happen on January 6th, and how it wouldn't go the way Trump thought it would, and saying that Trump should never mention the election again (nice try, Sean) and laying out a plan for Meadows and ImaNinny to try and save Trump's fanny.

I could keep going here, but there's no point - because if people actually believe that it was Nancy Pelosi and the FBI, they will never entertain another option.

They will never entertain facts.

They will never believe anything ill of the man who, today, attacked his own daughter and the AG who saved his presidency.

TGIF, everyone.

The Trump Years, in Movies

I stumbled upon an old article  - from 2018 - about a bunch of movies that long-time movie critic Roger Ebert really didn't like. Um, let me rephrase that - movies that he hated.  Per the article

When Roger Ebert hated a film, he didn't mince words. Here are 50 movies the Pulitzer Prize-winning writer absolutely loathed (including a couple of surprises that you might very well love), along with with his dry assessments of their value (or lack thereof).

Glancing through the clips, I was amused by how many of them were applicable to the four years of the Trump administration, with only some minor tweaks.  Below are my reviews, using Ebert's words for the most part, and actual movie titles, adapted to fit the last four years.

For example, consider  The Usual Suspects. In Trumpworld, that would be Kushner, and Pompeo, and Pence, and Kudlow, and Navarro, and of course Donny Jr, and many others. Here's the review, with my italicized changes:

Once again, my comprehension began to slip, and finally I wrote down: 'To the degree that I do understand, I don't care.' It was, however, somewhat reassuring at the end of his term to discover that I had, after all, understood everything I was intended to understand. It was just that there was less to understand than the administration at first suggests.

Or, for example, consider Fast Times at Pennsylvania Ave. (2019-2020)

The whole presidency is a failure of taste, tone, and nerve - the waste of a mediocre cast on erratic, offensive material that hasn't been thought through, or maybe even thought about.

How fitting is that, considering the many ill-fated Executive Orders, the government shutdown, the immigration debacles, and more?

In an administration that was constantly threatening that we were on the brink of Armageddon (2017, 2018, 2019, 2020) if we didn't listen to and follow our feckless leader no matter what, and where the communications team was constantly in a state of flux, confusion, and complicity, this review was definitely earned.

The Trump presidency is an assault on the eyes, the ears, the brain, common sense, and the human desire to be understood... Trump reportedly used the services of dozens of writers, yes-men, and press secretaries. Why did he need any? His dialogue is either character-limited tweets or self-serving drivel. 'Winning' is used so many times, I wonder if every single writer used it a few dozen times and then sat back from his smartphone with a contented smile on his face, another day's work done.

And then there's Donny Boy (2017).

No one is funny in Donny Boy. There are no memorable lines. None of the characters is interesting, except for the enigmatic figure played by Omarosa Manigault, who seems to have wandered over from The Celebrity Apprentice. Judging by the evidence on the screen, the presidency got a green light before a useable platform had been prepared, with everybody reassuring themselves that since they were such talented people, inspiration would overcome them.

Watching Trump Got Elected (2016) was painful, for sure.

This movie doesn't scrape the bottom of the barrel. This moving isn't the bottom of the barrel. This moving isn't below the bottom of the barrel. This movie doesn't deserve to be mentioned in the same sentence with barrels.

The president often told us how he hired only the best people, and one of them would have to be his son-in-law, about whom the movie Jared (2017) was made.

The story might perhaps be adequate for an animated film for children, with Jared, MBS and the others played by piglets. In the arena of movies about nepotism, it is a desolate vastation. Nothing exiting happens, nothing of interest is said, and the special wardrobes evoke not a place or time, but, simply wardrobes.

And it would be hard to talk about the Trump administration without mentioning our great First Lady Melania, who starred in 2017's Exit from Manhattan.

I'm sorry, but I just don't get Melania Trump. I've seen her in three or four movies now, and she generally has the same effect on me as fingernails on a blackboard. She's harsh and abrupt and staccato and doesn't seem to be having any fun. She looks mean...  What were your first thoughts when Melania turned up in the leather dominatrix uniform? Did you maybe have slight misgivings that you were presiding over one of the more misguided film projects of recent years?

One of the more, um, interesting characters of the last four years has to be the senior senator from South Carolina, who is the title character in Lindsey Graham, What a Ham.

Graham makes a living prostituting himself. How much he charges, I'm not sure, but the price is worth it if it keeps him off the streets and out of another movie. Lindsey Graham is aggressively bad, as if it wants to cause suffering to the audience... Speaking in my official capacity as a Pulitzer Prize winner, Mr. Graham, your career sucks.

Another incredibly dull character from the Trump years? Ivanka "If she wasn't my daughter I'd be dating her" Trump, another of the unelected bureaucrats doing their darnedest to destroy our hearts and souls. She was the star of her own full-length feature, She's Out of Control (2019).

What planet did the makers of this film come from? What assumptions do they have about the purpose and quality of life? I ask because She's Out of Control is simultaneously so bizarre and so banal that it's a first: the first movie fabricated entirely from sitcom clichés and plastic lifestyles, without reference to any known plane of reality.

Sadly, there were two particularly unfortunate career sacrifices during the early years of the Trump administration. Potentially irreparable harm was done not when the Old Generals (2018) announced they were leaving the administration, but rather when they each joined it.

Old Generals is stupefyingly dimwitted. What were Mattis and Kelly thinking of? Apparently their agents weren't perceptive enough to smell the screenplay in it's advanced state of decomposition, but wasn't there a loyal intern in the office to catch them at the elevator and whisper, 'you've paid too many dues to get involved with such crap at this stage in your careers'?

Holidays are always important at the White House, and the Trump years were no different. Well, actually, they were kind of different. The First Lady was not fond of the decorating, we learned.  And so it seemed that Christmas with the Trumps was destined to take harsh criticism.

It's a holiday movie of stunning awfulness that gets even worse when it turns gooey at the end. And what is it finally so happy about? Why, that the Trumps succeed in enforcing their lockstep conformity upon their colleagues? They form a herd mentality, without the mentality. The movie is not funny, ever, in any way, beginning to end.

Some of the decorations were downright scary, too.

And then, there's the bio-pic, The Apprentice President, in which Trump is the writer, director, producer, key grip, set designer, costume designer, props manager, makeup artist, editor, sound engineer, location manager, gaffer, best boy, caterer, florist, art director, stunt coordinator, stable genius, and more.

Trump's whole presence in this movie is offensively narcissistic. His speeches are melodramatic, interchangeable, self-aggrandizing groans and anguished shouts, backed protectively by patriotic symbols and cloying sycophants. His dramatic presence also looks over-protected, as if nobody was willing to risk offending him by asking him to seem involved, caring and engaged. Trump plays the whole movie looking at people's third shirt buttons, as if he can't be bothered to meet their eyes and relate with them. It's strange about the Trump performance. It's not just that he can't govern.  It's that he sends out creepy vibes. He seems self-absorbed, closed off, grandiose, out of touch with his immediate surroundings.

And finally, as our long national nightmare draws to a close, we close out the critical acclaim with one last look at the Trump years, via the movie 45.

I hated this movie. Hated hated hated hated hated hated this movie. Hated it. Hated every simpering stupid vacant audience-insulting moment of it. Hated the sensibility that thought anyone would like it. Hated the implied insult to the audience by its believe that anyone would be entertained by it.

That's funny. So did I.  So did I.

In Case You Missed it (v51)

It was VERY busy around here last week, so go grab your cuppa whatever and dive in!

Sunday School brought us interviews with Currently Acting and Maybe Soon Confirmed DHS head Chad Wolf, who was in the CNN SOTU classroom with Jake Tapper, and former FBI Director James Comey, who was in the Face the Nation classroom with Margaret Brennan.  Among other things, Wolf said that he's not authorized to send DHS law enforcement officers to police polling places, which was a good thing as far as Comey was concerned, as we learned in his 'speed round' answers.
  • He trusts "state, local and federal law enforcement to honor their oath to the rule of law and to not be part of suppressing votes." so thinks LEOS and US attorneys and the like will not be present suppressing votes in November.
  • He "can't imagine" that he's a target of US Attorney John Durham's investigation and he's "not worried at all about that investigation of the investigation. Next, I'm sure will be an investigation of the investigation of the investigation..."
My classroom visits sparked a Sidebar highlighting Jake Tapper's commentary at the end of his show on Sunday. He said, in part
Now, empathy and decency are of course not the only measures by which one makes a decision about an election. There is policy and acuity, feelings of safety and security, a host of other factors. But it is pretty clear there's a profound empathy and decency gap between President Trump and Joe Biden.
And what's important to keep in mind at this point in our nation's history, a politician bereft of empathy and decency, that's someone by definition who is willing to literally do anything, to sink to any depth to win.
I also sat down at the Update Desk, after more news came out about Rev. Franklin Graham's intentions, which I discussed in an Irony Board post from the week before,
And, there is, of course, the well-known history of Biden's personal life, losing his wife and daughter in a car accident, losing his son to brain cancer, and how it was his faith that got him through those tragedies. Ignoring all of that smacks of a person who has a specific message he wants to deliver, but won't come right out and say it.
Yet. I'm sure he's saving it for next week.
Well, it seems that I was right. Rev. Graham has been announced as one of the speakers for the Republican National Convention.
After those couple of twists and turns,  finally got to the David Muir/Robin Roberts interviews with the Democratic ticket, Joe Biden and Kamala Harris for your Sunday School Extra Credit. Much of the conversation centered on the pandemic, and on the debates and comments made then, and how she was eventually picked and how she felt about being the choice.
Harris was comfortable signing on as  VP choice, pointing to a number of policies that are "about translating the pain we collectively should feel as a country" and turning that pain into action on multiple fronts, including the Green New Deal - and that setting goals and timelines would be priorities there, along with a million new jobs.
And then, it was time for the convention, and the speeches, in all of their insufferable glory. And the president, who, you know, did presidential stuff as part of the convention, because just as he can't separate his presidency from his business interests, he can't separate his candidacy from the presidency.  Raise your hand if you're shocked about that...
  • From the opening night, which included a call for no birth control (Charlie Kirk), a blatant misunderstanding of our country and immigration (Most Favored Son's Girlfriend and $180,000/year campaign shill Kimberly Guilfoyle), and a complete lack of understanding of how the Republicans are not the party of free speech (Guilfoyle's boyfriend) and how they don't think cancel culture is "dangerous and wrong (Nikki Haley, who's in the battle against Ivanka to be the first woman president, it would seem). And there Sen. Tim Scott, the only black Republican in the Senate, who at least was honest.
Trust me though, after seven years in the Senate, I know I’m not the only one in Congress who failed civics.
  • From the second night, which brought us libertarian/Republicans Rand Paul, who at one point was honest about Trump and now is somehow one of the biggest fans of the self-aggrandizing fake conservative; the 'it takes one to know one' view of criminals from Pam Bondi, registered foreign lobbyist and former FL AG; the least son, who pleaded for attention from his daddy, and the ever pompous, unethical, afraid-of-strong-women SecState, speaking to us from a direct violation of his own State Department policy just issued in July; and the empathetic other daughter, who knows how it feels to not have a job, and about mental manipulation by the media.
This manipulation of what information we receive impedes our freedoms, rather than allowing Americans the right to form our own beliefs, this misinformation system keeps people mentally enslaved to the ideas they deem correct.
  • From the third night, which brought us politicians, first responders, people with pre-existing conditions, political candidates, sports heroes, and more - including someone accused of insider trading,
which I thought was pretty cool for the 'Law and Order' party, although I'm sure the arrest of the speaker earlier this month was all part of the grand deep-state hoaxspiracy to bring down the Chosen One, or something. What is it they say, W1GOTDEWAGOTDE (When One Goes Off the Deep End, We All Go Off the Deep End)?
  • And then, it was Thursday, the final night. (The emphasis here is mine.) Kevin McCarthy and Mitch McConnell spoke (those were fun), as did Ja'Ron Smith, who incomprehensibly managed to bucket together Ahmaud Arbery, (murdered for jogging while black), George Floyd (murdered while being arrested while black) and LeGend Taliferro (a four-year old child senselessly murdered in a non-racially-motivated beef between LeGend's family and a man with whom his aunt had a relationship); and of course, the penultimate speaker (who if everything she said is true, might actually be the first woman president), the first daughter. Among the things she told us about her daddy in her introduction?
He’s so unapologetic about his beliefs that he has caused me and countless Americans to take a hard look at our own convictions and ask ourselves, (How the hell did we elect a celebrity conman as president of the greatest country in the history of the world?)  What kind of America do we want to leave for our children, (one championed by a bully who lies through his teeth on a daily basis, brings out the worst in the worst of us, and has so lowered the bar that underground limbo is now a thing)?
I must say, it was all so bigly huge and patriotic, I took an extra day to get the TGIF post out, which included word-for-word the Pence and Trump acceptance speeches, without comment.

It was a historic and truly veritable pastiche last week, I've got to say.

I'll be back later with today's Sunday School.

Highlights from the RNC: Night Four

If the carefully curated highlights from nights one, two and three of the RNC were not enough, here are more, from the fourth and final night, starting with House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy.
We will call on the bedrock of what makes us the greatest country in the world, the American promise. A promise that everyone is equal under God, under the Constitution, and under the law. A promise that government is accountable to we the people, a promise that if you work hard and play by the rules, your opportunities are endless. (Sorry - I snorted at the part about playing by the rules.)
Ja'Ron Smith.
In the wake of the murder of Ahmaud Arbery, George Floyd, and LeGend Taliferro, a moment of national racial consciousness. I have seen his true conscience. I just wish everyone could see the deep empathy he shows to families whose loved ones were killed in senseless violence. (Honestly, putting Ahmaud Arbery (murdered for jogging while black), George Floyd (murdered while being arrested while black) and LeGend Taliferro (a four-year old child senselessly murdered in a non-racially-motivated beef between LeGend's family and a man with whom his aunt had a relationship) is incredibly disingenuous and a blatant conflation of two vastly different issues, but hey, that's the way things work these days, right? Honestly, the only time we hear Republicans talking about 'senseless violence" is in the latter circumstance, when a person is caught up in something outside their control.
Jeff Van Drew.
There are a lot of Democrats who support our president and are disgusted for what their old party, what my old party, has become. Here’s my advice. Be true to who you are now, not who the Democrats used to be. That’s why I’m a proud Republican and why I will be voting for Donald Trump. (Equally, there are a lot of Republicans who support Joe Biden for exactly the same reason: they are disgusted for what their old party, Van Drew's new party, has become. That's very obvious, to anyone paying attention.)
Mitch McConnell.
Good evening. It’s an honor to come before you tonight from the Commonwealth of Kentucky. As the only leader in Washington not from either New York or California, I consider it my responsibility to look out for middle America. (That's why I refuse to allow any bills to come to the floor in the Senate unless I know for sure what the president wants. And if he doesn't tell me, I don't ask him.) This election is incredibly consequential for middle America.
I’m immensely proud of the work the Republican Senate has done. (We refused to allow witnesses in the impeachment and made sure the president stayed in office so we can sit around waiting for him to tell us what to do, or for more judges to die.)  Like President Trump, we won’t be bullied by a liberal media intent on destroying America’s institutions. (We will instead be bullied by the president, and ignore the wishes even of you Republicans out there, who elected nearly 200 members of our party to serve you in the House). We will stand our post on behalf of the millions of Americans whose stories aren’t told in today’s newspapers, whose struggles are just as real. (Well, really, we'll sit on your stories, and drag them out at times like this, when it suits us. Other than that, we're just an ineffective part of a co-equal branch of government. You know what? I think that makes us 'flyover country' too!)
Ivanka Trump.
Good evening. Before I begin, I want to send a special message to everyone who’s been affected by Hurricane Laura. Our hearts are with you. The President will continue to support you every step of the way. And just like Americans always do, the nation will come together to help you rebuild your homes, businesses and communities stronger and more resilient than ever before. (We do that by sending boatloads of our hard-earned tax dollars to people who live in hurricane zones, some of whom have benefited from that socialist transfer of money more than once...)
Over the last four years, we’ve learned a lot. (And now I'm going to repeat a lot of the same things you've heard all week, so this part's going to sound really repetitive and boring. And it is). I recognize that my dad’s communication style is not to everyone’s taste, and I know that his tweets can feel a bit unfiltered, but the results speak for themselves. (Ask any of the Asian-American medical professionals fighting the coronavirus who have been spit upon, followed, harassed, attacked in person and on social media, because of your unfiltered daddy's tweets about the Wuhan flu... that's some great results right there, don't you think?) He’s so unapologetic about his beliefs that he has caused me and countless Americans to take a hard look at our own convictions and ask ourselves, (How the hell did we elect a celebrity conman as president of the greatest country in the history of the world?)  What kind of America do we want to leave for our children, (one championed by a bully who lies through his teeth on a daily basis, brings out the worst in the worst of us, and has so lowered the bar that underground limbo is now a thing)?
I am more certain than ever before we want a future where our kids can believe in American greatness, we want a society where every child can live in a safe community and go to a great school of their choice (which we'll pay for in that great socialist method of taking money away from other people and giving it to, you know, people who home-school their children, among others), who want a culture where differences of opinion and debate are encouraged, not canceled, (except when it's my clothing line and daddy called for everyone to boycott Nordstrom when they dropped my clothing line, or when he called on all of those other American companies, including Macy' and Harley-Davidson and all of the media companies and oh, sports leagues and teams, and professional athletes and all the rest) where law enforcement is respected, where our country’s rich diversity is celebrated (as long as the diverse people are registered Republicans, otherwise there's no need to even talk to them), and where people of all backgrounds, races, genders, and creeds have the chance to achieve their God given potential (well, maybe not Catholics, or Mormons, or Muslims...). This is the future my father is working to build each and every day.
Building, after all, is what he’s done his whole life. He’s admired and befriended construction workers on countless job sites (and left them unpaid, broke from having to sue him for payment, and stuff) ...
(And now I'm going to talk about how I'm governmenting, sitting in on briefings and, along with my dad, taking credit for things like trade deals and tax cuts.) ...
I watched him take the strongest, most inclusive economy in a lifetime, the lowest unemployment in a half century, and the highest wage increase for working families in decades, and closed it down to save American lives. (It is unlikely that any of his supporters will admit he did that; rarely does a day go by without a meme suggesting that it was the governors who shut down the country, not the president. So silly!) It is why our President rapidly mobilize the full force of government (and the full force of my beloved Jared, whom the president went to, to have him go around the full force of the government) and the private sector to produce ventilators within weeks, to build the most robust testing system in the world (I snorted again), and to develop safe and effective treatments, and very, very soon a vaccine...  He believes that nothing is beyond our reach, and that the best is yet to come (thankfully, she didn't Guilfoyle that last part).
I have seen all of my life, how my dad believes in the potential of each individual. (He has yet to apologize for calling for the death penalty for the Central Park Five - perhaps he's forgotten about them, and his full-page ad in the NY papers?) Earlier this evening, we were all inspired by the incredible testimony of Alice Johnson, a great grandmother who was sentenced to life in prison for a first-time nonviolent drug offense. I was with my father when he decided to commute Alice’s life sentence. (Because whenever anything important - anything at all - happens in our government, I'm right next to my Daddy) ...
... And we’re just getting started (me, and my daddy). My father did not campaign on this issue. He tackled this injustice because he has a deep compassion for those who have been treated unfairly. More than rhetoric and political pros, the ability to build consensus and achieve bipartisan success will help heal our country’s racial inequities, and bring us forward together. (Perhaps one way he might thing of building consensus would be to, you know, actually talk to Democrats, rather than demonizing them, calling them names, and oh - never inviting them to bill signings - you know, bills that were approved by the Democrat-led House of Representatives, not just the do-nothing Senate? Maybe you could whisper that in his ear the next time you're sitting next to him in the Oval?)
President Trump (I keep trying not to say "my father" so often, like Eric and Tiffany did, but it's so hard!) is advancing the American values of work and family. Four years ago in Cleveland, I said president Trump would deliver for working women. Last year, over 70% of all new jobs were secured by women. Four years ago, I told you my father would focus on making childcare affordable and accessible. In president Trump’s first term, we secured the largest ever increase for childcare funding, giving more than 800,000 low income families great childcare at a cost they can afford. As part of Republican tax cuts, in 2019 alone, our child tax credit put over $2,000 into the pockets of 40 million American families. (socialism at its best - sheesh, if you can't afford to have kids, why are you having them??) Democrat politicians recently introduced a plan to increase the child tax credit. Yet when I was fighting less than three years ago at the president’s direction to get Congress to double the child tax credit (Me, dammit - not anyone else, ME!), not a single Democrat voted to pass the law. We got it done anyway. Four years ago, I promised that president Trump would support mothers in the workforce. In his first year in office, he signed into law the first ever national paid leave tax credit. Today, eight million more Americans have access to this benefit. (You do realize, don't you, that just about everything your father has done involves bribing someone - and by someone, I mean corporations - to act like a patriotic American?)
Four years ago, I said that Americans needed an economy that permits people to rise again. During president Trump’s first three years in office, 72% of all new jobs went to Americans who had been outside of the workforce. Four years ago, I told you I would fight alongside my father, and four years later here I am. (Hey! Look at me! I'm governmenting, just like my daddy!) Many of the issues my father has championed are not historically Republican priorities, (in fact, they are not remotely Republican ideas, and still, they all support me, er I mean they all support him - a RINO - because they're scared to death of him) yet where Washington chooses sides, our president chooses common sense... Recently, he took dramatic action to cut the cost of prescription drugs, despite fielding angry calls from the CEOs of nearly every major pharmaceutical company. Now, when we see attack ads paid for by Big Pharma, my dad smiles and says to me,” You know we’re doing something really right if they’re hitting us so hard.” (And of course, rather than working with the folks who were elected to do the people's business, he's signing tons of executive orders, and Sharpie actions, including on the drug pricing issue - some of which may never actually come to fruition. In fact, in less than one full term, your father has signed 182 executive orders, compared to 146 in Barack Obama's first term; and, in the full spirit of winning, daddy's total is nearly 2/3 the number Obama signed in two full terms. Were you sitting next to him when he said he wasn't going to do them that often?)
This spring, our president saw that American crops were going to waste because food supply chains were disrupted by the virus. He directed Secretary Perdue and me (me!) to find a way to get this nutritious food, fresh fruit, vegetables, meat and dairy to families most in need. Within a matter of days, we launched the Farmers to Family Food Box Program, which has now delivered over a hundred million meals into the hands of American families. To protect the most vulnerable among us, I’ve worked alongside the president as he signed into law nine pieces of legislation to combat the evil of human trafficking. I’ve stood by my father’s side at Dover Air Force Base as he’s received our fallen heroes, and each time it has steeled his resolve to finally stop, finally stop the endless foreign wars. (I've been learning at my egomaniac father's knee for so long, I'm almost as good at talking about myself and my accomplishments as I am at talking about his accomplishments, aren't I?)
To change the paradigm in the Middle East, he took a fresh approach. I heard foreign leaders beg him (not to abandon them, our allies, and cave to the evangelicals on Israel, while the Israeli president is under indictment for corruption) not to move the American embassy to Jerusalem, yet he delivered on a promise, also made and unfulfilled by past presidents because my father knew that it was the right thing to do... Dad, people attack you for being unconventional, but I love you for being real, and I respect you for being effective. (Eric, THAT's how you tell daddy you love him!)
...Washington has not changed Donald Trump. Donald Trump has changed Washington. America doesn’t need another empty vessel who will do whatever the media and the fringe of his party demands. (LOLOLOLOL! Without the Tea Party - the fringiest of all fringes, you and your Daddy wouldn't be here - he'd be bankrupting companies- his and other people's, robbing charities, and whatnot -- and you? You'd be cashing in on all of those China trademarks you got in 2018 and in 2019). Now more than ever, America needs four more years of a warrior in the White House. Tonight, I could not be more proud to introduce my father, a man I know was made for this moment in history. My fellow Americans, our First Lady and the 45th president of the United States, Donald J. Trump.
Coming up in tonight's TGIF? The full nomination acceptance speeches of Mike Pence and Ivanka's daddy.

A bunch of random stuff to mull over as the 'work week', however that's defined for you, comes to a close.

The NFL Team Formerly Known as the Washington Redskins will be known, this year anyway, as the Washington Football Team.

Why, you ask? Well, there apparently are some trademark and licensing stuff, plus logos and stuff, plus who knows, maybe generating more interest waiting for the new name to be revealed?

And, speaking of waiting, in case you can't, here's a bone you can gnaw on, if you like, that suggests the new name has been chosen, and perhaps why there might be some legal stuff to deal with.

Let's see, what else do we have?
  • Regular math, not Andrew Yang MATH: did you know that the average maximum weekly unemployment benefit for the 50 states, DC and Puerto Rico is less than $500? Or that only nine states pay extra unemployment for someone who has dependents?  Or that only thirteen states pay at least a "living wage" ($600/week, the equivalent of $15/hour for 4o hours) in unemployment (with or without dependents) Or that Kentucky's maximum is higher than New York's? The figures don't include the extra (and effectively expired) COVID-19 pandemic benefit of $600 per week.
  • The entire assembled teams of the New York Yankees and the Washington Nationals took a knee before the National Anthem last night - and the world didn't stop spinning, except for lots of people on social media. And, staying with baseball for one more item, the Toronto Blue Jays will play most of their home games in Buffalo, where they have a Triple-A affiliate. The reason? Concerns about the coronavirus, of course, which prevented them from being able to travel to and from their home stadium. (Not for nothing, there's a ban on travel across the US/Canada border which is preventing people from working, being present for the birth of their children and so on).
  • The president may or may not have asked his Ambassador to the UK to ask the Brits to see about holding a British Open at Trump's Turnberry course in Scotland. Both Trump and the ambassador say it didn't happen. Golf Magazine justifies the ask by saying that according to their rankings, Turnberry is #17 on their Top 100 Courses in the World list. If that's true, they can do it when Trump's out of office.
  • The FDIC has relaxed regulations related to banks hiring people with minor criminal records, "expanding the pool of potential candidates and leveling the playing field for aspiring bank workers." Going forward, folks with offenses like small dollar theft (less than a grand) or possession of fake identification, can be hired without a waiver; around 100 or so waivers were requested annually.
And, I'll leave you with the funniest thing I saw all week.

TGIF, everyone.

Trump in Transition (v46)

Look at me!

LOOK AT ME!

Did you see me on the news? Even the fake news, MSDNC and the rest of them, they had my picture, did you see it?

I was holding a Bible!!

Someone asked if it was my Bible. Nah, it's 'a' Bible, not 'my' Bible - heck, I don't even know where they found it, probably in the nightstand in one of the rooms in my hotel or something, I don't know. It's a good book, they tell me. Very good, good words. Good words. I don't have time to read it, but I hear it's very good. I'll ask Mike. Is Mike here? Where's Mike?

I didn't speak any of the words in it, because after that Two Corinthians thing, well, I'm a little gun shy, but it doesn't matter, because the people who care that I'm holding it don't care that I've never read it. They read it, so I don't have to. It's OK with them, it's just not OK with the fake news, those people in the back there, yesterday.  My people just care that I have other people who can put one in my hand when necessary, like today. Today it was necessary. And it was pretty cool, don't you think? Didn't I look good, holding it like that?

I looked stern, didn't I? And Righteous? I gotta tell you, it sure FELT Righteous, holding it in my hands, and making my best serious face, and holding it up for the press?  Fixed them, didn't I? They had to get pictures of ME holding a BIBLE - and all they had were their cameras. I had the BIBLE!

And I had those peaceful protesters gassed - I gassed them, I did! Vicious tear gas, it hurts. Really hurts, in the eyes, the eyes. So painful. So painful. I showed them, I surely did. Hanging out in a park across the street from My House? I don't think so!

I watched as it happened, I was watching, I wasn't in the bunker, and it was GREAT having them pushed away, crying, from that church. Funny how they thought they were safe there, right? Good stuff. Good stuff.

And the bleeding-heart liberals, the left-wing clergy members and their little seminarians,
From Raw Story
handing out water and snacks for the protesters? And hand sanitizer! Yeah, I showed them, didn't I? They're not like 'my' religious people, they're not like 'our' religious people, are they? Nah, nothing like OUR people.

But I'm all for peaceful protests, you heard me say that, right? It sounded good, didn't it?  Sounded perfect, I thought. And then I gassed them! Even the religious ones who were there! Bet that hurt, right? Probably hurt pretty good, I don't know. They tell me it hurts.

And I didn't even tell anyone we were coming! HA! How's that for showing how STRONG I am! I'm not going to tell you I'm coming, I'm just going to SHOW UP and hold up this Bible, and it's going to look good, in front of your church, they call it the 'Church of Presidents', right? Historic church, historic. All of the presidents have come here, they say, since that Madison guy. We like him right? 2nd Amendment? Yeah, we like him a LOT!  I'll always protect the 2nd, gotta protect that one, right? 2nd!

Probably even went inside, the others. All of them. And now I've been there, too. It's true - that's what they tell me - I'm the President, they tell me, and I can do WHATEVER I WANT, whenever I want. And boy, I wanted to march across the street with Ivanka and the rest of those white people - didn't she look good, Ivanka? Didn't she look good? She always looks good, doesn't she?

Even in a mask. She's the only one who looks good in a mask, don't you think? Good girl. She's a good girl, isn't she? Looked a whole lot better in the black mask than Sleepy Joe Biden, didn't she?

And I don't even care if I was holding the Bible upside down in the beginning - I'm just going to say that's Fake News, it's FAKE NEWS, and the pictures are fake and anyone who posts one of those pictures is the ENEMY OF THE PEOPLE. They're the ENEMY! Fake news, so fake.

But we have a great country, I said - great line, great line, in front of that great church, right? And it's going to be even greater, soon. We're coming back. Great country.  Oh crap - I forgot to say God Bless America! Do you think they noticed? I forget to say that sometimes...  Yeah, they probably noticed. I'll just have them add that to the transcript. No one will ever know.

Anyone seen my Sharpie?

TGIF 9/6/19

Time for our weekly look at the good week/bad week ledger.

Let's start with Debra Messing, who had a bad week, if you ask me. Aside from her retweeting a racist post, something she clearly should have known better than to do, there was the whole kerfuffle about political donors.

Messing suggested (with others piling on in agreement) that the list of donors to the president's upcoming Hollywood fundraiser should be made public. But here's the thing: when she called for a list of Trump's donors, she didn't simultaneously release a list of the political contributions that she's made, nor did she demand that Democratic donors are similarly publicized. Shame on her - let's be all about transparency and equality and publish all of them. Or conversely.

Moving on to the great state of Alabama, rarely have so many been talking about a state - people who have about as much intention of visiting Alabama as, well, as Dorian did. I'd guess that more folks can now find Alabama on a map than at any other time in recent memory, maybe no.

The president is making a bad week worse by doubling down, having his Cabinet members double down, and literally making an ass of himself. He's acting like the proverbial four-year-old who picks up his toys and goes home when he doesn't get his way.  On the plus side, though, his Sharpie-doctored map has spawned a whole lot of creativity in the Twitterverse, with loads of drawings of all kinds of Trump-related stuff being hilariously marked up. Search the #SharpiePresident hash tag for some fun. FYI, there's some NSFW content there, so be careful.

We also learned which projects the Pentagon was going to ignore, instead misappropriating the money for Trump's Mexican-funded border wall, leading all of us to try once again to understand exactly how Mexico is paying for the darn thing. We're paying for it, of course - the military, and FEMA, so far, are having a bad week as money is pulled to help make sure that Trump gets 500 miles of wall built by the 2020 election. Because a political promise is more important than our three branches of government, dontcha know. Mexico is having a good week, I think.

James Comey had a mixed week. On the one hand, he's not being charged with any crimes, but on the other, he violated FBI policies in a couple of ways, we were told, including sharing his memos with a friend who shared them with the press. Rabid Trump fans are demanding he be jailed for life or longer, maybe jailed for life AND stoned in the public square and stuff, as if any company would to that to an employee. Heck, in some circles, he'd be considered a protected whistle blower.

Boris Johnson had a bad week, suffering embarrassing losses in his first couple of votes as the UK's Prime Minister. Worse than that, though, the 'British Donald Trump' lost the confidence of his little brother Jo, who resigned as a member of parliament and as a minister in his brother's government. In a tweet, he pointed to an "unresolvable tension" between loyalty to the family and the national interest.  Which leads me to declare that Ivanka Trump also had a bad week. Now that she knows it can be done, she can stop being complicit in her father's nonsense, and the longer it takes for her to do it, the worse her weeks become.

And finally, on a sadder note, the number of people suffering from serious lung illnesses stemming, it seems, from their vaping habits continues to grow, as does the number of deaths, with five reported. Some are calling for Ned Sharpless, the acting head of the FDA, to do something or resign.

I'm not sure there's anything he can do - or should do - to solve this problem, other than offer thoughts and prayers. You know, like we do with mass shootings. Good for the goose, and all.

TGIF 3/22/19

Ah! The first Friday of spring!

Let's take a look at the week, starting with the late-breaking news we got today: the Mueller Investigation is over.

Yep - it's true. The confidential (as required by law) report has been turned in to William Barr, the AG, and he's already sent a letter to Congressional leaders letting them know he's get to them quickly with his initial summary of the report, maybe even this weekend.

We won't know for a while, at least until Barr gets back to Congress, how much of the report will be made public. Unless, of course, the Dems stop all of their other investigations and devote 100% of their time to trying to get the report released. Or, they could surprise me, and actually start trying to legislate and stuff.

The end of the investigation should be a good week for someone - just not sure who.  Maybe Mueller, who can go back to being his kind old self.

Moving on to North Korea, Chairman Kim had a good week, as the president tweeted today that he was cancelling sanctions that the US Treasury Department had decided to implement against some Chinese shipping companies. Why would Trump do that? Sarah Sanders gave us the scoop:
President Trump likes Chairman Kim and he doesn't think these sanctions will be necessary.
Sadly the good week for North Korea was a bad week for the Treasury Department; being undercut, apparently without warning, doesn't leave a good taste in anyone's mouth, I'm sure.

Speaking of without warning, Bibi Netanyahu is having a good week, it seems. First, he gets invited to spend a couple of days at hanging at the White House while he's in town to speak to AIPAC, the American Israel Public Affairs Committee, and then the president decides (again) to tweet about policy, saying that it's time the US recognized Israel's sovereignty over the Golan Heights.

Honestly -- just, here's a tweet, just here's a tweet, and then he moved on to free speech on campuses and then on from there to celebrating World Down Syndrome Day.  Just a typical day in the life of the 45th president. Never mind that Netanyahu is, again, in the think of a rough election campaign, and of course there are those indictments, but all in all, I think he had a good week.

With the Mueller report, the sanction reversal, and the policy reversal on the Golan Heights, I'm not sure whether the United States had a good week or a bad one -- I guess we'll have to wait and see.

What else was out there? Oh, yes -- seems Jared and Ivanka are using personal devices to handle official business, with Jared using an app to copy text messages and forward them to his official government account.

So I guess that means that Hillary Clinton's having a good week, since there's now nothing wrong with that she did.

TGIF, everyone. How was your week?

November 30, 2018

TGIF 11/30/18

What kind of week did you have?

Was it better than, say, Paul Manafort? I'd say probably. Manafort got himself in to a little hot water with Special Counsel Robert Mueller, will lose his plea deal, and may face new charges and another trial. And, at the same time he was lying and violating his deal with Mueller's team, Manafort's lawyer was sharing information with the president's legal team - pretty ballsy, for sure.  For more information on the trials and tribulations and twists and turns of the Manafort saga, check out this link to stories he's mentioned in from The Guardian.

Was your week better than, say, Michael Cohen's? We now know that he's admitted lying to Congress, which is a bad thing, but he's definitely living up to his 'putting family and country first' mantra much more so now than his old "I'd take a bullet for Donald Trump' mantra of the past - and for that, I like the new Cohen more than the old one. And shame on the GOP for coming to a quick conclusion that there was no 'there' there in their House investigation. You know, the "we love you, man!" probe that was full of nonsense and Nunes...

The president himself, well, he's not had the best week ever, with these new issues coming out of Mueller's camp. And while 'he' did 'win' the Mississippi Senate runoff between the 'front row seat the the hanging' Republican and 'the guy with the same name as those TV awards' Democrat, Trump and his family (Eric, Donny Jr, and Ivanka) and even Mike Pence all 'lost' the race for the NY House seat, as Claudia Tenney finally conceded to Dem Anthony Brindisi. But, silly me, those House races don't matter, the president doesn't care about them, I forgot.

But there were folks who had really good weeks. Like Riley Morrison, the 9-year-old girl - or should I say, the 9-year-old basketball player - who was disappointed in NBA star Steph Curry, and let him know about it. She wrote him to complain that his signature shoes were only sold under the Boys section of the Under Armour website. Here's an excerpt from Riley's letter to Curry:
I know you support girl athletes because you have two daughters and you host an all-girls basketball camp. I hope you can work with Under Armour to change this, because girls want to rock the Curry 5s, too.
That oversight was quickly corrected - you'll find the Curry 5s under both the Boys and Girls sections of the UA website now. And there's more, as you can see from Curry's response to Morrison. After letting her know the website issue was being corrected, he added:
I want to make sure you can wear my kicks proudly -so I am going to send you a pair of Curry 5s now and you'll be one of the first kids to get the Curry 6. Lastly, we have something special in the works for International Women's Day on March 8, and I want you to celebrate with me! More to come on that, but plan to be in Oakland that night!
And finally, there's a group of people who had also had a really good week. Over 100 NICU nurses at Mercy Children's Hospital in St Louis won $10,000 on the Mega Millions, and promptly donated the money to two coworkers. One had lost her son to suicide, the other's husband is battling cancer. They needed the money more than the winners, and the winners needed to help others more than they needed their post-tax $50 each.

These last two stories made my week a little better; I hope they do the same for you.
